Apparently the question of the day is...

How do you do that voodoo that you do so well?

I had a recent request along with some past inquiries into the art (ahem) of being a 3D artist. What programs do you use? How do you get into doing 3D art? How do you get into computer game art in general? etc.

The first factor is your own determination. I think the number one thing that will carry you through just about any obstacle you encounter will be your determination. If you want to be a computer artist bad enough you'll find a way.

Well, you say you got that. You're probably saying you got a ton of it. What's next?

Let me give you a short list of positions that seem to be occurring. 3D modeling, 3D Animation, 2D painting, visual design and probably about 100 more I can't think of this second. HAHAHA

Pick a subject you like. Draw, sketch, and just think about it. Maybe you like cars or spaceships or whatever. Heck, maybe you like big fuzzy bears. Whatever it is, just find a subject that really interests you.

Now, find a program to work with. For 3D, There's Lightwave and 3DSMax but any 3D package can give you some skills. For 2D painting, there's PhotoShop, and Painter, Paintshop Pro. Now, start bashing away and making mistakes. Whether you want to model, animate or paint just dive on in. You shouldn't be concerned about making everything perfect as much as learning the program (or tools). The idea is to build a library of knowledge on your chosen program.

The next part is easy. Practice, refine, and practice. Repeat until you feel you have something you like

To bring it all around you should start to shop around to companies you'd like to work for. Find out what they may want to see in a demo tape or interview. A cool subject plus a decent program will get you the skills necessary to deliver.

I'm gonna leave you hanging for a week. Next time I'll talk a little about how we do our stuff around here.

Thanks,
