Continuing on the AD&D theme of last week, I have been thinking a lot about GenCon!
For those of you who have never been, GenCon is the worlds largest 'gaming' convention, and is held every year in early August in the Milwaukee area. The first GenCon I attended, back in 1980, was strictly a pen & paper / board game affair buried in the labyrinthine corridors of the University of Wisconsin, Parkside campus. (The big news of the year was that someone had 'invented' the ten-sided die). Now, GenCon is a huge consumer event held at the convention center in downtown Milwaukee, with electronic games and trading cards almost overwhelming pen & paper games, and board games nowhere to be seen. The crowd is also more diverse - there are still the hardcore 24-hour gamer types, but last year I also saw more families and older as well as younger fans - which I believe is a positive sign that gaming has now been much more broadly accepted as a mainstream activity.
This year we are planning an even bigger presence at GenCon than last year. We are planning to be there with a large booth for Black Isle, as well as another booth for our Star Trek games. We will be actively involved in the convention activities, and are working with TSR/WotC to host some AD&D tournaments or activities around Planescape: Torment as well as Baldur's Gate. We will have several demo stations for demoing some of our new games. Planescape will be there, naturally, but we will also be demoing some games that we haven't announced yet, so you will want to be there if you can. Plus, Guido and Colin will be there - so you can get that autographed pair of boxer shorts you always wanted.
At any rate, I know some of you will be attending, and I was curious if you had suggestions of the kinds of things you'd like to see from us, or perhaps ideas for events that we could run/be involved with. We will be located right next to the TSR booth, so we will be very close to our Planescape and Forgotten Realms partners on the pen and paper side of the business. Drop me a note and let me know your thoughts!
